In Fall of 1988, the $8.1 million Ball Telecommunications Center opened at Ball State University.

One of the major components was the distance education facilities.  Two TV classrooms were built: one seating about 100 students and the other about 35 students.  Even more than 10 years after they were built they're still better than 99% of the TV classrooms out there.

But there was more to it than the whiz bang technology in the actual classrooms.  The infrastructure--in terms of support technology and staff--was unparalleled.  As Production Manager, I had 6 producer/directors, 3 graphic artists, an assistant director, and around 25 students to assist faculty.
(Note: Much of the funding for the student employees was provided by a grant from David Letterman.)

In addition, the University funded a substantial investment in media production equipment.  We were the envy of television stations and production houses statewide.
